NYS Set to Pass New Law Offering Certain Protections to Nannies & Other Domestic Workers
New York Expected to Give Protections to Nannies
The NYS State Senate this week passed a bill that would require paid holidays, sick days and vacation days for domestic workers, along with overtime wages. It would require 14 days’ notice, or termination pay, before firing a domestic worker.

Wee Care Nanny has long encouraged our clients to offer these workplace guarantees to their nannies, housekeepers and other domestic workers. In fact, we strongly advise and help clients put together a Family/Nanny Worker Agreement that covers the particulars of each job, responsibilities, salary, vacation time, sick days, overtime and notice of termination. Nanny or Daycare-You Decide
Why should I hire a nanny instead of using a childcare center? There are many reasons in our opinion:
- For starters, your children will receive much more individual attention from a dedicated and nurturing caregiver of your choosing, allowing them to build relationship skills and form close bonds.
- Children have a more secure and safe environment in a home setting. Your nanny can provide a lot of intellectual stimulation that overburdened, understaffed childcare centers may not be able to do.
- The nanny can teach your children another language, engage them in art projects, and even create a "daycare" environment by inviting over other children to play and learn.
- Children cared for at home tend to get sick less often than those placed in childcare centers.

Salaries for summer nannies vary tremendously depending on the number of children in their care, the number of hours they work, the responsibilities they’re given, their level of experience and education, and the region of the country where they are employed. Ballpark guidelines range from $8 to $22 per hour. The best way to find out what’s typical in your area is to ask a nanny agency, or to ask several friends or colleagues who have either hired nannies or have worked as a nanny.
