2019 Holiday Bonus Guide for Your Nanny, Babysitter or Housekeeper

We get some variation of the question below a lot during this time of year and wanted to offer some guidance.

"We love Doris (name changed by the agency for privacy) and need help on what to give her as a Christmas bonus. She has been with us a little over a year. She is a delightful and we all adore her. Thank you again for finding Doris and your continued support.”

To answer the question, a full-time nanny can usually expect a holiday bonus of 1 week's compensation – 2 to 2.5 week's pay depending upon her length of service. Other ideas include a round trip airfare to her home-town for the holidays or a cruise trip. Additionally, if the nanny has been with the family less than a year, half of her weekly salary is standard. If the nanny is just starting, a $200 to $300 gift card sets a nice tone.  A hand-written note of thanks expressing your appreciation and referencing a yearly highlight of the caregiver/child relationship is an additional way to show your genuine gratitude.

Some families will include an extra little something coming from the children like a homemade card, cookies or her favorite confection which surrounds the monetary gift with genuine warmth and appreciation from the child.

For the on-call regular babysitter that provides care several times each month, a gift equal to one night's pay is the norm. Many families choose to provide a $75-$150 gift card to her favorite shop, cafe, nail salon etc.

Housekeeper/Cleaner, 1 to 2.5 week's pay, depending upon her length of service and a small gift like a bottle of wine, fine chocolate or Mani-Pedi gift card.

Obviously, this is a general guideline of industry norms in the NY Metro Region. Some families give considerably more or less depending on overall job performance, length of employment, particular circumstances, and family budget.

Wee Care nanny wishes you and your loved ones a wonderful  and joyous holiday season!

Paid Family Leave Act for Nannies, Housekeepers and Caregivers

As we have received several inquiries about  the NYS Paid Family Leave Act that went into effect in 2018, we wanted to share additional information.

The NYS Paid Family Leave Act covers all employees of private employers in New York State including, but not limited to, nannies, housekeepers and eldercare providers.

"Paid Family Leave provides eligible employees job-protected, paid time off to:
·         Bond with a newly born, adopted or fostered child,
·         Care for a family member with a serious health condition, or
·         Assist loved ones when a spouse, domestic partner, child or parent is deployed abroad on active military service.”

As of 2019, eligible employees will receive up to 10 weeks paid family leave at 55% of their average weekly salary, not to exceed 55% of the NY statewide average weekly salary. The maximum weekly benefit for 2019 is $746.41.

In 2021, eligible employees can receive 12 weeks paid family leave at 67% of their average weekly salary, not to exceed 67% of the NY statewide average weekly salary.
